Squirrels

We have seen a few of the normal gray tree squirrels since we lived here but not as many as expected. In the past week we have had a pair of young squirrels discover we have sunflower seeds in a pan on the porch for the birds that don't like to use the hanging feeders. The chipmunks that live under the porch have been coming to the pan each summer and even some in the winter. We can tell they are some that were born this spring as they aren't as big as the other squirrels and I don't think their tails are as fluffy as the other squirrels are. They have taken over the pan feeder. They will chase off the doves and chipmunks when they try to get seeds when the squirrels are their. We may have made a mistake by letting them eat here. Last year a big squirrel discovered that it could chew through the plastic hanger for the hanging feeders in the tree. Then it would come down the tree and get the sunflower seeds by rolling the feeder on the ground. A couple of raccoons did the same thing. Hubby redid the hangers with heavy wire that the squirrel can't chew through. So far the little ones are just feeding on the ground. They love the sunflower seeds and the chucks of apple cores I put out for the birds. Might try a slice of orange tomorrow. I remember the rock squirrels in New Mexico loved the orange peal.  The chipmunks eat the pulp but not the peal of the oranges.

He went that-a-way.

awww, aren't they cute. I used to feed the squirrels where I used to live, I bought a 'squirrel feeder' and one day I saw a squirrel sitting in it eating the peanuts I put in there, so cute. He then brought all his friends which meant I had to buy several bags of peanuts a week for them, in order to keep them from the bird feeders. The grey squirrel has ousted our native red squirrel unfortunately, although thanks to conservation programs the red squirrel is making a bit of a come back in certain areas. Lovely photos xxx
